it's one of those violence-against-women statistics (it comes up in one of my modules at uni) that women are more likely to face violence in the home, whereas (young) men are more likely to be mugged/attacked in the street by strangers. Although those do factor in rape and domestic violence statistics, so if it's just mugging, then... but it still annoys me that it's women who are taught to be afraid of the dark, and that uni's hand out this ridiculous advice, most of which is common bloody sense!

They forgot to say that if you really want to avoid being attacked you should not have a husband or boyfriend or ex-boyfriend or any male relatives.

Yeah, I'm unclear as to the exact statistics but it could be because less women go out alone after dark than men... But still, if it's equally likely to happen regardless of your gender, why worry so much if you're female?

I always found "don’t walk alone after dark" strange. What's the difference between walking in the dark and in the light? I expect it's only slightly more likely that you'd be attacked in the dark.

I've seen several feminist arguments that men are more likely to be attacked ... but i think that's probably because women are more careful than men because they're given paranoia-inducing advice like this!
